WHAT IS LIFE COACHING?

Any athlete who wants to get better at their sport requires a coach to provide skills and feedback toward improving their performance and keep them motivated when things get tough. In simple terms, Life Coaching is simply a partnership between a ‘coach/therapist’ and anyone who desires to improve their ‘performance’ across various life domains, with the most common areas being work, relationships and personal growth. The two most common times people seek out life coaching are 1. when they are going through a life transition, like ending a relationship or beginning retirement and 2. when they feel dissatisfied with where they are at in ‘life’ and desire more but feel stuck or lost. Life Coaching can give people the confidence and ability to move forward in areas of their life where they want change.

Life coaching can be helpful whenever you want to achieve specific personal projects or goals, develop your career, improve your relationships or want to live your best life and reach your full potential. Life domains that coaching can be useful include, but aren’t limited to:

·       health and fitness;

·       relationships (friendships, romantic relationships or family);

·       career or study

·       finances

·       holiday and travel

·       hobbies or recreation

·       personal development (confidence, independence, assertiveness)

·       spirituality

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN LIFE COACHING AND THERAPY?

In basic terms, coaching is more about focusing on the positive and personal development, while therapy tends to focus on the challenges in life and how to manage and overcome these challenges toward personal development - there is tremendous overlap though!

Clinical psychologists are registered health professionals who have specialist, post-graduate training to allow them to help people to reach goals in their lives using theoretically grounded and scientifically validated techniques. When working with clients who desire life coaching, we consider what is going on right now, where they would like to be and why and identify and mitigate any obstacles or barriers in their way of desired change. We tailor our techniques to the person and their goals.

A FEW SIGNS THAT COACHING PSYCHOLOGY MAY BE HELPFUL FOR YOU

You feel lost.  Clinical psychologists are really good at helping people find their way, understanding who you are and what you want in life.

You want to change profession or have a career. Perhaps you are unsure what work or career you want or need to boost your confidence to break out of a rut and make the leap to do something different.

Your friends are tired of hearing about your problems or you don’t want to burden them. It can be very useful to work with a psychologist who is objective and can listen and ask you the right questions to help you move forward in life.

You procrastinate rather than ‘do’. A lot of people spend too much time NOT doing the things they know they should be or could be doing. Reaching your goals takes motivation, discipline, and hard work. Working from a coaching perspective and having someone to keep you accountable can make all the difference in helping you progress and achieve the life you want.

You don’t have time to waste. Life can be hectic and juggling commitments is time consuming. You don’t want to be wasting your precious time going around in circles when you could be out there achieving your goals and living the life you’ve always wanted. Working with a psychologist can help identify the most effective solutions to get you to where you want to be, as quickly as possible.

You’re unhappy and desire more.  Working with a psychologist can help you explore the reasons behind your unhappiness and take steps to feel better.

TWO COMMON BARRIERS TO LIVING

FEAR

Often people desire change but are too scared to take the necessary steps to make it happen. If we’re honest, we’re all scared of something. Whether it be fear of failure, fear of success, fear of change, the dark, or whatever it may be, you are certainly not alone. A psychologist can provide tools to identify your fears and change the way you think and feel about them. Fear is always going to be there but what’s important is having the courage to stand up to it. Face your fear and do it anyway!

LOW SELF CONFIDENCE

Just like fear, low confidence is something that everyone struggles with from time to time. For some, life circumstances or a series of difficult events or relationships can chip away at our self confidence. If you doubt yourself or have little self-confidence then it can get in the way of you taking the necessary steps to live the life you want. Working with a psychologist can definitely help to boost your confidence so you have the inner strength and belief to strive for what is important to you.
